English description
The Jewish community of Pančevo was officially founded in 1870, although the first Jews began settling there in the late 15th century. The Jewish cemetery was founded in 1840 and is still active today. Jewish institutions and organizations were established during the 19th century. Hevra Kadisha was founded in 1833 and Talmud Torah in 1881. The first synagogue was inaugurated in 1876, the second was built between 1907 and 1909, located at today's address 30 Svetislava Kasapinovića Street. Before the beginning of the Second World War, 600 Jews lived in Pančevo. Only 76 of them survived the Holocaust. The synagogue was partially destroyed in 1955, and what was left of it was abandoned and almost completely destroyed in a fire that hit the building in 2007. The Jewish Community Pančevo is still active.
